More About Why We Should Strength Train?

A few of the many benefits of regular strength training:

MUSCLE MASS

As we age our muscle mass begins to diminish (approximately 3-5 percent per decade) and our percentage of body fat (the fat on our bodies) increases. Because of this our bodies take on a less than firm/toned appearance. Strength training, regardless of age or gender, will help preserve and enhance lean muscle mass. Therefore you will become stronger, firmer and have a more toned appearance.

WEIGHT CONTROL

Strength training on a regular basis will help increase lean body mass which may increase metabolism by around 7 percent. So you will burn calories more efficiently and therefore losing weight will become easier.

OSTEOPOROSIS

Because of the ageing process we naturally lose bone density, which increases our risk for developing osteoporosis. Women are at a greater risk because of the hormonal changes they encounter as they age. Regular strength training will help bones grow stronger, which will reduce the risk or slow down the effects of osteoporosis.

DECREASES RISK OF INJURY

Building muscle helps protect your joints from injury and increases your balance and coordination. This is important to help prevent falls and maintain your independence as you age.

OVERALL FITNESS

When done correctly, the type of strength training protocol we advocate will also improve your overall fitness level to an equal or greater extent than traditional steady state cardio exercise.
